Accelerating the Progress of Students with Reading and Writing

Accelerating the Progress of Students with Reading and Writing:

This research based interactive in-service is designed for Elementary Learning Support and Classroom Teachers (adaptable for the Middle School level). This presentation is based on overwhelming evidence and findings from well-known literacy experts, such as Dr. Marie Clay, Dr. Richard Allington, and Regie Routman. The focus will be on strengthening the reading/writing connection in all students, specifically our most at-risk learners. In an interactive manner, the presenters will demonstrate, describe and give examples of an exemplary push-in or pull-out daily reading and writing (word work) intervention that will dramatically accelerate the reading of students. Participants will explore this easy-to-implement Intervention model and understand the essential key components of accelerating growth with vulnerable readers. They will be given opportunities to practice and experience how to teach in a manner that facilitates powerful strategic activity. Our goal as educators is to provide just-right learning opportunities that facilitate grade-level reading in our students. This presentation will answer the questions “What is possible for students experiencing difficulties in reading and writing?” and “How can we bring all our students to grade level in reading?” Many teachers who have attended the in-service in the past have commented, “I wish I would have had this knowledge much earlier in my career!” Over the past eight years, over 300 students supported by the presenters and who were below grade level in reading, reached the average band of instruction.
